George William Underwood, Age 24

George was another man born in Dawley but had moved away to live in Motherwell, Scotland at the time of joining up. George’s parents were listed as Mr & Mrs William Underwood of 5 Bridge Street, Motherwell.

He was killed in action whilst serving with his battalion on the 2nd June 1915 in the Ypres Salient, his body not being recovered; George’s name appears on the Menin Gate panel 38. The day on which George was killed, the battalion war diary recorded - Heavy shelling which resulted in 22 KIA and 46 wounded. His battalion were part of the 26th Brigade, 3rd Division was relieved by the 2nd Suffolk’s on the night of June 7/8th 1915.

In the 1891 census George’s Parents William and Sarah were living at The Meadow, Dawley, these houses would have been in the area between Malinslee Church and Dawley Bank, on this census George’s age was given as 7 months, he was christened George William Underwood at St Leonards Church, Malinslee, on the 29th Oct 1890.
